synecdochic wrote a fabulous and interesting essay on the issue of "nice vs mean" in feedback on fannish writing.  i think it's pretty brilliant and certainly sums up and elucidates my thinking on the subject so i thought i'd link to it here.   the conversation in the thread is also worth reading.  and especially since someone (nameless to protect her feelings)  i know has been struggling with her own responses to criticism she's been getting, it seemed very timely.  let me know what you think!

Having read the piece she wrote, a lot of it makes sense and as a writer, I think that my discomfort should be no excuse for someone to leave a harsh criticism of my work, but it might take me a long time to get around to that piece.

And the one thing that struck me was one of her examples about how it might be a piece that the writer has no intention of going back to again, and that is how I tend to write, but I like to think that whatever criticisms come up, I apply (to the best of my ability) to the next thing I write in that particular fandom or ship. It's just interesting.

My first reactions to that type of crit when I first got started into fandom (like around 11 yo) were based on what other authors did, though as I've become more accustomed to fandom in general, obviously there is no norm. But I'm glad you linked to that article, because it is very helpful. I guess I just wanted to share my experience with you. :)

*hugs you*

*hugs back*

It's all about give and take. And whenever I leave constructive criticism, I try to be nice about it because I have been hit back by these 12-year-olds who get their friends to wage Internet war on me too. So it's all about finding a balance, I guess.
